There are many ways in which people of all ages can get involved in the life of the Fort. There are opportunities for volunteers, work experience, and involvement in special projects and Friends organisations.

The Friends of South Shields Museum and Arbeia Roman Fort
By joining the Friends you will be supporting two South Shields Museums and will also receive:

The Arbeia Society
By joining The Arbeia Society you will be supporting the excavation work on site and you will also receive:
- Two magazines and a journal each year
- Up-to-date excavation reports
- Admission to the summer lecture programme and preferential admission rates to the annual conference
- Admission to the South Shields Archaeological and Historical Society's spring and autumn lecture programmes
- 10% off all products in the Fort shop
Costs: A yearly subscription is:
Adults: £10.50
Concessions: £10
Associate membership: £9.50
Family membership: £12
There is a small additional charge for overseas membership to cover postage costs.
Earthwatch
You can join the excavations at Arbeia by contacting the Earthwatch Institute, a charitable foundation which sponsors work at the site between June and September of each year. All volunteers pay a fee to finance the excavations. If you join an Earthwatch team you will be given meals and accommodation in a local guest house for two weeks and enjoy excursions, daily briefings and participate in the work on site. Student Placements
At various times of the year there are a strictly limited number of non-paying places for students of archaeology or others who can demonstrate a genuine interest in learning more about the subject. To apply for one of these places please write to Arbeia, explaining why you are interested in volunteering.
Cohors Quinta Gallorum
Cohors Quinta Gallorum is an early third century military and civilian re-enactment society. Quinta holds events during the summer months at Arbeia and elsewhere and, during the winter, meets once a month at Arbeia. Annual subscription to Quinta is £11.50. Summer Programme
During school holidays there is an extensive programme of art and craft activities and family event days. From Roman re-enactments to painting for toddlers, there is something for everyone. For details please contact the Learning Officer on (0191) 456 8740.
