March your little soldiers to Arbeia Roman Fort
Looking for somewhere to take the kids this weekend? Look no further than Arbeia Roman Fort in South Shields, where excavated remains, reconstructions of original buildings and fun interactive exhibits mean there is something for all ages to enjoy.
Arbeia Roman Fort is the most extensively excavated military supply base in the Empire. The remains of the Fort can be clearly seen, including the headquarter buildings, barracks, granaries and even latrines.
Standing nearby are stunning reconstructions of the gateway, Commanding Officer's house and barrack block, rebuilt on their original foundations and based on archaeological evidence unearthed at Arbeia. See authentic furniture and frescoes in the Commanding Officer's House and climb the gateway for great views across Tyneside.
In the museum are objects found during excavations at Arbeia, which are some of the most impressive found along Hadrian's Wall. Learn about the Life of a Roman Soldier, with a display of weapons, armour and household objects, then discover how the Romans buried their dead with the fascinating display of tombstones and altars.
Children can become archaeologists for the day with Arbeia Roman Fort's special TimeQuest exhibition. They can dig for finds on a reconstructed excavation site, piece together pottery and have a go at writing just as the Romans would have done.
And next weekend why not take a trip over the river to Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend and discover more of the North East's fascinating Roman history?
