THE XXIST INTERNATIONAL LIMES (ROMAN FRONTIERS) CONGRESS AT NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, 2009
Accommodation
Accommodation can be arranged through the NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau which has set up a special website for Congress bookings: https://www.conferencebookings.co.uk/delegate/NGILIMES2008 . The Bureau offers a variety of accommodation, ranging through dormitory accommodation in a backpackers hostel to large city-centre hotels. The mid-price options are halls of residence at Northumbria University (Claude Gibb Halls and Camden Court), the campus of which is adjacent to that of Newcastle University. The halls are ten minutes’ walk from the main Congress venue.
Delegates are responsible for booking and paying for their own accommodation and are strongly advised to use the Convention Bureau, although they can of course make their own arrangements if they so wish.
Delegates should note that coaches for the excursions will leave from the halls of residence and will not be able to pick up delegates from accommodation elsewhere. Delegates should also note that extra nights’ accommodation in Newcastle will have to be booked for the pre-Congress excursion to York and the post-Congress excursion along Hadrian’s Wall. Accommodation for the post-Congress excursion to Scotland on the evenings of the 24th and 25th August at Stirling will be booked for you by the conference organisers, although delegates will need to book their own accommodation for the night of 26th August when we return to Newcastle.
Bursaries for students or early-career delegates and financial
support for other delegates
A small number of bursaries will be available for students and early-career delegates (typically, employees of small organisations without the resources to support attendance at the Congress). The bursaries will cover most of the cost of attending the Congress (accommodation, sessions and excursions, with a contribution to travel expenses), but not the pre- or post-Congress excursions. For details please e-mail the Secretary of the Organising Committee, limes@twmuseums.org.uk
The Organising Committee regrets that it cannot offer support in general for other delegates. Every effort has been made to keep the costs for all delegates as low as possible by securing substantial funding through grants and sponsorship. However, in some circumstances it might be possible to pay for two nights’ accommodation and travel expenses for speakers. A very strong case would have to be made for such support. Part of the case would be that the applicant would be reading a paper which the session organisers regarded as essential to their session.
