Desk-based assessments are a statement of the likely archaeological potential of a site, considering whether features of archaeological interest are likely to exist on the site and the significance of these features. These factors are matched against the likely impacts of any development to make recommendations for mitigation.

 

Most assessments are specified by the planning authority, but it is increasingly common to consider archaeology in pre-application packages such as environmental impact assessments and to use this research to inform design from the outset to reduce the potential delays to your project.
