TWM Archaeology operates with a core staff of 20 full-time professional archaeologists with a wide variety of skills and specialisations, a brief profile of some of our team follows:

Paul Bidwell
Head of Archaeology
Paul Bidwell has been Head of Archaeology at TWM for over twenty years and was previously with the Exeter Archaeological Unit. He manages the commercial project turnover in addition to other museums management responsibilities.
He has a particular expertise in Roman archaeology and Roman pottery studies having published extensively in these subject areas, and has recently been appointed to a consultancy for the management, display and investigation of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site. He has published numerous archaeological monographs: his record of fully and promptly published projects is rivalled by few archaeologists of his generation.

LLB (Exeter University); MA Archaeology (Exeter University); Member of the Institute of Field Archaeologists; Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London; appointed OBE for services to heritage in 2012.

Dr. Nick Hodgson
Archaeological Projects Manager
Dr Nick Hodgson is Principal Keeper of Archaeology for TWM, responsible for 18 permanent staff and (at present) 15 contract staff engaged on archaeological projects. He has been with TWM for eighteen years and since 1996 has managed large-scale excavations and post-excavation projects at Segedunum (Wallsend) and Arbeia Roman Fort, South Shields, which have which included archaeology, reconstruction, and museum redevelopment to a value of £1,000,000 in each case. He is responsible for the staffing, financial management and strategic direction of developer funded projects carried out by the department. He has published a monograph on the excavations at Wallsend and 35 other archaeological reports or papers.

Jonathan McKelvey
Archaeological Projects Manager
Jonathan McKelvey has worked in commercial archaeology for over fifteen years, returning to the North-East ten years ago after working in the Cotswolds and Birmingham. He has particular expertise in the management of major archaeological fieldwork projects, particularly of the Roman period and has been deeply involved with most of Tyne and Wear Museums Archaeology’s largest projects over the past ten years.

Alex Croom
Archaeological Projects Manager
Alex Croom has published widely on aspects of archaeological finds, especially in the area of Roman pottery, finds, and costume, and manages post-excavation research and artefact study projects, including large scale research projects such as the Hadrian’s Wall ceramic database.

Warren Muncaster
Archaeological Project Officer
Warren Muncaster has worked widely within professional field archaeology, including spells in Bedford, Essex and Germany. He has extensive experience of the day to day management of archaeological fieldwork projects within the North-East.

Terry Frain
Archaeological Project Officer
Terry Frain has over fifteen years experience of working in the North-East and is currently the Project Officer for the Earthwatch research excavations at South Shields. He has particular expertise in prehistoric archaeology and Roman monumental architecture.

Graeme Stobbs
Archaeological Project Officer
Graeme Stobbs has worked within field archaeology for over twenty years and has particular experience of managing the fieldwork, post-excavation work and community archaeology projects at Arbeia. He also has particular expertise in archaeological buildings recording and archaeological illustration.

Eddie Dougherty
Site Supervisor
Eddie Dougherty has over twenty years’ experience of the supervision of archaeological fieldwork within the North-East, and has a specific interest in prehistory.

Site Supervisor
Julie Pugh has particular experience of supervising and coordinating buildings recording and documentary research.

Michael Donaldson has over eight years experience in field archaeology, with particular experience of site surveying using GPS and Total Station systems, land and building surveying and the use of computer aided design and surveying software.

Jamie Scott
Archaeological Assistant and Webmaster
Jamie Scott has a wide range of experience in commercial archaeology including excavation, watching briefs and GPS / Total Station surveying and has extensive experience of desk-based assessments and historic buildings recording; as well as a background in I.T. and corporate web-design.
