William Beilby (1740-1819)
Decanter ( around 1761 to 1778 )
The decoration on this glass decanter is typical of the work done by the Beilby family - Richard, Ralph, Mary and William. It is inscribed with the word 'Claret' set a fancy scroll supported by a fruiting vine motif in white enamel. The vine motif is characteristic of William Beilby's decoration. Little of the Beilby glass is signed, but the little butterfly engraved on the neck of the decanter serves as their trademark. Ralph Beilby left the family business to start his own business, and for twenty years was the business partner of the wood-engraver Thomas Bewick.
