Our free family history walks and talks in 2012 are the perfect place to begin your family history.

What's Your Story? Discovering Family History
11 February - 27 May 2012

This exciting new temporary exhibition will celebrate the family histories of local people. Come along to discover your family’s story.

Monday 23 January, 1.30pm - 2.30pm, Discovery Museum
Researching ancestry on Tyneside and Wearside with family history author Keith Gregson

Tips on researching family history in the areas covering modern North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Newcastle/Gateshead and Sunderland.

Planting the roots: A beginner’s guide to starting your family tree with genealogist Anthea Lang

How do you construct a family tree and what records are available to you? Bring your own family history documents if you have them.

Family fortunes: Using wills with family and local history lecturer Joyce Jackman

Wills and inventories are useful when trying to work out an ancestor’s social status. They can also be used to uncover family relationships.

Decipher old handwriting with family history lecturer Wendy Stafford

Come and learn the basic skills that will help you to interpret and read old documents with confidence.

The churchyard as social history: A guided exploration of St James’ churchyard with Judith Green

Visit the grave of members of the rich and powerful families who lived inBenwell as well as local pitmen, traders and inhabitants of the workhouse.
