when i left school in december 1960 i got a job at monkwearmouth station as a booking clerk. the station manager was a miss sewell who lived in fulwell.there was only 2 of us working there as many of the trains didn't stop.i remember when i used to sweep the platforms there used to be rats running over the rail lines.there was abig coal fire in the booking office so we were never cold.a lovely lady lived in the rooms above and i think she looked after everything when no one was there.i must visit again to see if the office has changed as i left after 9 months to start an apprenticeship.
