Victorian Museum Room


Below you will see some examples of real Victorian Artefacts.

 

Candle Snuffer

Because there was no electricity in Victorian times, people used candles. To put the candles out they were used like scissors to trap the wick and snuff the candle out.

 

Gentleman's Smoking Cap

This hat is a Victorian man's smoking cap. They became popular in 1850 and were very colourful and patterned in a Turkish and Russian style.

 

 

 

Glass Eye

This is an artificial eye. In Victorian times they were made from glass, today they are mostly made from plastic.

 

 

Mine Sinker Helmet

This helmet was used by a mine sinker in Victorian times. It is made of thick leather and has a protective strip at the back. It was used in Seaham colliery in County Durham.

The job of the mine sinker was to direct the work of sinking the mineshaft so they could get in to mine the coal.

Penny Farthing

This is a bike from 1870. They were called penny farthings because the two wheels look like a penny coin and a farthing coin. They were used by sportsmen to race in competitions.

 

 

Polyphone

This was used to make music in rich people's houses. A round card disk with holes in it, is inside and when you wind the handle this spins and makes a tune.
