Queen Victoria is crowned

Queen Victoria marries Prince Albert

1842

Women and children banned from working in the mines

1844

Children under 9 banned from working in factories

1851

Great Exhibition held in London's 'Crystal Palace' showcasing thousands of inventions

1854 - 1856

Crimean War in Russia. More soldiers died from disease than the war itself

1861

Prince Albert dies from typhoid

1869

John Sainsbury opens a small grocery shop in London, later developing into a nationwide chain of shops

1870

Primary education available for all

1874

Jeese Boot begins to sell herbal medicines. By 1900 there are around 160 "Boots" shops nationwide

1875

Local authorities have the right to pull down and replace the slums

1881

Electric street lighting appears

1890

The first electric trains run on London's Underground railway

Primary education in state schools becomes free
