Scaphopod

Scaphopods are the only living molluscs with a tube-shaped shell. The small shells are usually gently curved and tapered and because of this they are known as "tusk shells". The shell is open at each end and the animal lives with the wider end, where its head is, buried in the sediment. It feeds on tiny animals that it finds in the sediment using specially adapted tentacles. Scaphopods first appeared in the Ordovician period (about 450 million years ago). Living species are more common than fossil ones and occur mainly in deeper seas.
