Homemade open sandwiches start from £3.50, Children’s sandwiches from £1.25 and main courses from £3.95.

On the ground floor of the Great North Museum: Hancock, with direct access from the street, is The Costa Street Cafe.  Visitors can take time out of their busy day to enjoy a great coffee and a sweet treat, whether they have been visiting the museum or just passing by.

Jane Shepstone, Director of Catering, Great North Museum: Hancock, says, "We look forward to welcoming visitors to our cafes. We have created the menus to celebrate the best of British food seasons and local tastes.  Our signature cake is Heather Honey cake. The Heather Honey is special for several reasons not least of which is the difficulty in its harvesting but also for the unique toffee like taste but also for the remarkable way in  which it is the only honey that never granulates. Heather honey is a ‘thixotropic gel’ similar to a non drip paint that if stirred becomes liquid but after a few minutes will become a gel again.”

After an energising break in one of the cafes, visitors can discover the wonder and diversity of the natural world, spectacular objects from Ancient Greece, mummies from Ancient Egypt, a planetarium and a life-size T-Rex dinosaur skeleton. There is also a large-scale interactive model of Hadrian's Wall, northern England's spectacular Roman frontier.
