Great North Museum’s North East Tourism Awards 2011 double whammy
The Great North Museum: Hancock scooped two awards at the North East Tourism Awards 2011 last night, winning Gold in the Access for All category and the Bronze for the Business Tourism Award category.
The awards took place at the Stadium of Light football ground in Sunderland, and saw 44 businesses from the region commended for the their high standards and excellence in areas such as customer service, training, accessibility and sustainability, and contribution to the region via tourism.
The judges of the Access for All Award dubbed Great North Museum: Hancock as ‘exemplary’.
Sarah Glynn, manger of the museum said:
“We have a fantastic museum and we are passionate about ensuring that everyone is able to experience what we have to offer.
“We are always looking for new ways to allow our visitors to enjoy their visit. We’re thrilled to be recognised for something that we feel so strongly about.”
Entrants included hotels, B&Bs, adventure parks and wetland centres, museums, farm shops and art galleries, showcasing the best the North East region has to offer.
Geoff Hodgson, chairman of the North East Tourism Advisory board said:
“The quality of this year’s shortlisted finalists has shone through the judging process.
“Their commitment to providing a first-class experience for their customers and constantly improving their business is what makes North East England such a great place to visit.”
All gold winners are now longlisted for the national Visit England Awards for Excellence which will take place in spring 2012.
Since opening in May 2009, the Great North Museum: Hancock has received a variety of awards and commendations for excellence.
