Museum volunteers honoured at award ceremony
Some of the North East's most dedicated volunteers have been recognised for their work in the region’s museums and galleries at the annual Renaissance North East Museum Volunteer Awards 2011, held at the Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle.
Winners included the team of volunteers at Bellingham Heritage Centre, which was a winner in the Outstanding Achievement by A Volunteer Run Museum category.
Other winners included volunteers from Beamish, the Museum of Hartlepool, mima and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.
Lucy Cooke, Volunteer Programmes Co-ordinator at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, which organised the awards ceremony, says:
“In 2010-11, more than 2,000 volunteers contributed their time to the North East’s museums and galleries. This adds up to an astounding 80,000 hours of time which has been given to help support museums and galleries in the North East.
“We really value this contribution and without this hard work and dedication, many areas of our region’s rich and diverse heritage would be unavailable for visitors to explore and perhaps even forgotten.”
All the winners at this year’s awards were nominated by staff or volunteers at the region’s museums and galleries and the awards ceremony took place at the Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Renaissance North East Museum Volunteer Awards 2011 are supported by John Lewis.
