Ever wondered what’s in the storeroom of the museum, in the vaults at a gallery, backstage at the theatre or in the projection box at the cinema?
Northern Architecture are giving visitors the chance to find out as they co-ordinate a series of FREE Behind the Scenes tours of Newcastle and Gateshead’s Cultural Venues on the weekend of Friday 10 June – Sunday 12 June.
Eleven of the region’s best known cultural buildings will welcome new visitors in exclusive free tours; Northern Stage, Dance City, The Tyneside Cinema, The Sage Gateshead, Shipley Art Gallery, Seven Stories, Theatre Royal, Hatton Gallery, Live Theatre, Great North Museum and BALTIC.
Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums is getting involved with three venues taking part: Shipley Art Gallery, Hatton Gallery and Great North Museum: Hancock.
Behind the Scenes at the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead provides an opportunity for participants to see behind the scenes in the object stores and find out how the Gallery operates, including a tour of recently completed development schemes. Tour with Curator Amy Barker at 1pm on Friday 10 June.
Visitors on the Behind the Scenes at the Hatton Gallery can discover the hidden gems in the Archive Space including African artefacts and Indian miniature paintings on the tour with Learning Officer Hazel Barron-Cooper at 4pm on Friday 10 June.
All things bright and beautiful, all cultures old and new! Senior manager Steve McLean leads A Journey of Discovery - a tour of Great North Museum: Hancock showing the rejuvenated museum, which underwent a £26m renovation project and reopened to the public in May 2009. Tour at 2pm on Saturday 11 June.

Places are limited and must be reserved in advance. All visitors are welcome on the tours but they’ll be particularly interesting for anyone who has never visited the venue before, hasn’t been for a long time or simply wish to explore the venue more. Meeting point and directions to the venue will be given after booking.
