Between the Wars: Works from the Hatton Collection
24 Jun - 22 Aug 2010
Between the Wars is a small display featuring works from the Hatton collection. A wide-range of styles and techniques, looking at some of the artistic trends that coincided with the foundation and early years of the Gallery between the two world wars.
The Hatton has a particularly good collection of British etchings dating from the late-nineteenth century to around World War 2. The display will feature a large group of these from the 1920s and early 30s when Britain saw a boom in the production and sale of etchings. Also featured will be British artists such as Harold Gilman, Charles Ginner, David Bomberg, Wyndham Lewis and Mark Gertler who were associated with the avant-garde before the War, but in the post-war period looked to more traditional idioms. There will also be a small group of works that will highlight some of the artistic trends prevalent in Europe at the time.
