New Acquisition at the Laing
The Laing Art Gallery has acquired an important abstract work by British artist Victor Pasmore.
Pasmore was head of painting at Newcastle University from 1953 to 1961 (though the college was still part of the University of Durham at the time he joined).
His work, Linear Motif in Black and White (circa 1959-60) was produced during the period that Pasmore was at Newcastle University, where he set up the influential Basic Course in Art and Design with Richard Hamilton.
Julie Milne, curator of the Laing Art Gallery, says:
'We are delighted to have acquired the painting for the Laing Art Gallery and we are planning to show it in our major new display of work by artists living and working in the North East, which will open at the Laing in 2010.
'The painting was purchased with the aid of MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, independent charity The Art Fund and the Friends of the Laing,'
