Seasons: Paintings from the Laing collection
15 Dec 2007 - 06 Apr 2008
Seasons: Paintings from the Laing Collection explores artists’ depiction of the changing seasons, and includes local scenes such as Cullercoats, painted by John Wilson Carmichael.
Julie Milne, curator of the Laing Art Gallery, says:
“This new exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase some of the Laing’s best-loved paintings.
“It is a diverse exhibition and visitors will be able to see paintings in a wide range of styles, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.”
Woks on display by Laura Knight include The Beach and A Dark Pool both painted by Knight while she was working in the Newlyn artists’ colony in Cornwall.
North East artist Ralph Hedley’s work is also on display, including Threshing the Gleanings, a depiction of North East farm workers, and Roses for the Invalid, a painting of a young country woman cutting roses from around a cottage door for the sick room inside.
The exhibition will also include a contemporary intervention by North Eastern artist Jennifer Allinson.
Highlights from the Laing Art Gallery’s outstanding collection of paintings, including works by Laura and Harold Knight and David Bomberg.
