Contemporary painting and sculpture by artists who use the textures and properties of paint in a variety of ways. Hexham-born Turner Prize nominee Glenn Brown and painters Gary Hume and Katy Moran are amongst the artists whose work will be on display. The exhibition has been put together in response to Auerbach’s painting of his wife Julia, which is in the Laing collection and will be on show in the exhibition. His paintings have been described as sculptural, due to the heavy layers of paint which are built up. In contrast, Glenn Brown’s paintings, while having the appearance of a similarly textured finish, have smooth surfaces. His paintings are often based on the work of other artists, including 19th century romantic artist John Martin and Frank Auerbach.
