Notes on a Return

The Laing is putting together a series of new events and exhibitions, recalling a sequence of live artworks which took place at the Gallery in the late 1980s.
Notes on a Return, which will run from April to September 2009, will recall live artworks made in 1985, 1986 and 1987 by influential artists Anne Bean, Rose English, Mona Hatoum, Bruce McLean and Nigel Rolfe.

New commissions showcase:

Five UK and international artists have been commissioned to make new works that respond to the five performances which took place at the Laing in the 1980's. The commissioned artists are Sam Belinfante (UK), Sofia Greff (Germany), Graham Hudson (UK), Meg Mosley (UK) and Viola Yesiltac (USA/Germany).
Symposium:
4 - 5 September 2009
A two-day symposium in conjunction with a
performance showcase will be a unique opportunity to discuss the
project with the participating artists, guest speakers, curators
and critics.
Guest speakers include Guy Brett, Mike Collier, Simon Herbert, Lois Keidan, and Andrea Tarsia.
The programme for the welcoming reception has now been announced:
Friday 4 September, 6-8pm: Welcoming reception and performances - Free entry, all welcome
6.05 - 6.20pm: Performance by Sophie Lisa Beresford
6.30 - 7pm: Stimmung. A performance by Sam Belifante in collaboration with St. Jude's Church Choir. Stimmung is created to respond to the recollections of Bruce McLean's performance Good Violence and Physical Manners performed at the Laing on 6 & 7 February 1986.
7.15 - 7.25pm: Drawing Water with a Bottle. Performance byViola Yesiltac.Created to respond to the recollections of Rose English's performance Plato's Chair performed at the Laing on 11 April 1985.
7.30 - 7.50pm: el tit ec nam ro frep. Performance by
Sofia Greff, created to respond to the recollections of Nigel
Rolfe's performance The Rope, performed at the
Laing on 31 January 1986.
Symposium
Tickets for the whole symposium are £16.50 or £8.50 concessions. Refreshments provided. Tickets are available on the door, in advance from the Laing Art Gallery shop or through Tyne & Wear Museums' online shop.
