Souter Lighthouse is located on Lizard Point in South Tyneside. It was opened in 1871 and was the world’s first electric lighthouse. It was built to warn ships of the treacherous rocks between Whitburn and Marsden. As well as the lighthouse there are also a pair of foghorns which, until recently, were a familiar sound in the area.
Today Souter is a National Trust property and is open to the public during the Spring and Summer months. Souter has a dedicated team of volunteers who assist with guiding members of the public and groups around the lighthouse.
