"One of the first recollections I have of coming into the brigade was the smell"

One of the first recollections I have of coming into the brigade was the smell. I used to come in- I donít know if youíve actually smelled hemp rope- that has got a distinctive smell. And when you came in it was all, it was not man made fibres, it was the old hemp rope, and the smell was beautiful. You used to come in there-it was one of those smells that as soon as you walked in you knew exactly where you were. The hawsers, the rocket lines, everything was made of this and it was distinctive. I used to love coming down just to get the smell, and basically I knew I was home.
