Alex joined the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade in 1950. He is now the Brigade's chairman. Alex worked as a fish merchant on North Shields Fish Quay and is chairman of the Fishermen's Mission.
Alex was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 15 February 2006. The interview took place at the interviewees's living room and lasted 29 minutes and 48 seconds.

"The Brigade when I joined was a different situation "
The Brigade when I joined was a different situation - it was mainly breeches buoy. We trained for breeches buoy rescues, and it was coming just after the war so they had all the coastguard that did the training were ex-Navy, coming out of the navy, going into the coastguard, so there was a real nautical, naval tradition linked with it, and linked with the Brigade. This of course has changed as the years have gone on. The Brigade’s spread its wings and from one or two shipwrecks happening occasionally, we’re now one of the busiest companies on the North East coast.
