Alex joined the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade in 1950. He is now the Brigade's chairman. Alex worked as a fish merchant on North Shields Fish Quay and is chairman of the Fishermen's Mission.
Alex was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 15 February 2006. The interview took place at the interviewees's living room and lasted 29 minutes and 48 seconds.

"The other sounds is the instructions that were given by the captains"
The other sounds is the instructions that were given by the captains because we tend to use various commands like “nipper your luff,” which means get hold of all parts of the luff and the ropes together in your hand, muster is a word which just means meet, collect at, and words of that sort. The other sounds that I remember is the sounds of the blocks being pulled tight, you had the sound of the ropes going through the sheathes as they were, they were, because the weight of the harness, the noise of the whips being taken out to the ship, and of course the sound that is recognised by ordinary people, the sound of the rocket going off. You know, certainly the cordite rockets and nowadays the rockets that they use which is compressed air. That goes, instead of a bang, that goes with a whoosh, you know.
