Ray reported missing at sea
"That was in 1966, it must have been March or April"
That was in 1966, it must have been March or April. I was eight months pregnant and I lived up in Riverview, Tynemouth and it was bad weather, it was really, really bad weather, and Ray used to always phone me if he was stuck in bad weather and he hadn’t, he hadn’t rung me at all. So I was getting myself so worked up and actually I was calling him. You know when you walk around talking to yourself because there is nobody to talk to, and I was saying, “he’s not away, can’t be away in this, he’s never phoned me.”
And my sister in law came up, Ray’s oldest brother’s wife came up and said to me, “come on, we're going down to Mum’s,” and I still didn’t think anything, I called him all the way down the road until we got to his mother’s house and when I walked in they were all sitting there with sullen faces and it was then I knew something was wrong.
And they told me, sat me down with a cup of tea and luckily I hadn’t gone for my newspaper that morning because it was in the newspapers before I even knew that the boat was reported missing- the name of the boat and everything was in the newspapers and they hadn’t informed me at all.
His brothers were down on their boats trying to get radio contact with them and it must have been about... it seemed a lifetime but it wasn’t, it must have been about half an hour the phone rang at his mother’s and it was the office to say that they were getting radio contact with them and everybody was alright and it was really... And I know what people feel like to go through- it’s a dangerous, dangerous job.
