"No, I didn’t realise what a lonely life it was"

No, I didn’t realise what a lonely life it was, that, you know. I mean, you know, I know I had my parents and, but my brother was in the Royal Navy and he lived away and, so there was really just me and… Ray had a big family so it wasn’t so bad, and we all went to each other’s house and we didn’t, didn’t feel lonely. But it was a lonely life. I don’t think so much now the boats aren’t away as long now. When Ray worked Grimsby, it was 21 day trips unless they filled the boat before and they came in earlier. But, and Shields, when he worked Shields on the prawns, it was four o’clock and back sometimes midnight when he walked through the door. In fact I used to come down sometimes and I used to just wait for him finishing, just to come aport, to go home with him when the kids got older. It was just something- you were out the house, you weren’t in.
