Bart Taylor

Bart was born in Cullercoats. He served part of an apprenticeship at Swan Hunters shipyard as a Shipwright. He broke his indentures to join the Royal Navy in 1941. He was demobbed in 1946 and joined the merchant navy. He came ashore and worked until he retired in 1982.
Bart was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 1 March 2006. The interview took place at Cullercoats Community Centre and lasted 30 minutes and 24 seconds.

"The lad I was with, he wanted one"
The lad I was with, he wanted one. And he asked the skipper if, if, he was a company man, like, you know, and he was pretty well established, and the skipper said, “aye, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the passengers you had, like.” So we built it on the foredeck and we put it ashore in Plymouth. Dropped it, dropped it off at Plymouth and he got it taken from Plymouth to Lee on Solent, and as far as I know, it’s still there.
And it was for sailing, that was, like. It was a little sailing dingy, it was only about 16 foot. About from that bin to about here, nice little boat, though.
And when the third mate saw it, he was a Rhodesian, he asked if I could build him one, so the next trip we built one for him. And that was put ashore, it was mahogany, that one, it was a nice boat, we put it ashore in Lourenço Marques on, it was Rhodesian railways used to have the big flat trucks, used to have the copper, big cobber ingots on like, you know, and they were going back light, you see. So he made an arrangement and we lifted it ashore with one or two derricks and lashed it down on one of the wagons and it went up to, it’s Lake Tanganyika now.
