"Yes, when I was a bairn, I used to get it in the summer, the seaweed used to wash up"

Yes, when I was a bairn, I used to get it in the summer, the seaweed used to wash up. The summer weed, just like a garden, you know, you get seaweed and its got its time of year for, for coming off, just the same as your fields and what have you, you’ve got your weeds coming up and you’ve got time for them going away. Well, that used to come up to the high waters and as the tide would ebb it left it all at the high waters, and the sun used to shine on it and it used to have its own particular smell.

And if you were walking on it, you never had shoes in them days, you were walking barefoot, you put your feet on top of it and they used to go through. It was like jelly underneath. Not a nasty smell- well, it smelt of, oh Christ, what, what do you make out of seaweed? You put it on cuts and what have you- iodine! It’s one of the big things that you make out of seaweed, is iodine, like, you know, and that was the smell that you had. You could, once the wind was off the water, like, blowing ashore, you could smell it. You could smell it well inland.
