"What does the sea mean to me? It’s a very wild mistress"

What does the sea mean to me? It’s a very wild mistress. It’s something I love, it’s a fabulous environment, both above and below. Treacherous, you’ve always got to be careful, you’ve always got to be aware of how powerful it is, because it is, if you don’t, it will get you. And you’ve got to treat it with respect. Mistress is probably the right word because my wife think she’s lost me to it, several times. You know, it’s constant, it’s been constant in my life, it’s been there for a long time, as long as I can remember; I’ve been doing things by the edge of it, or on it, or under it. So it’s always been there and it’s one of those major constants. It’s always different but it’s always there.
