Doug was born in South Shields in 1919. He joined the merchant navy at 15 with great ideas of adventure. During World War Two Bill was in the Arctic convoys and at the D-Day landings dropping off armaments.
Doug was interviewed by Kylea Little on 15 November 2005. The interview took place at South Shields Royal British Legion and lasted 55 minutes and 5 seconds.

One of the reasons I’m in this club here, the Seaman’s Mess. That lad who was just in, Billy Wold, he’s the one who was up in Russia with me. We were up there for eight and a half months, in Murmansk and Archangel. Billy Wold was my shipmate and he’s in the Mess, the Seaman’s Mess. I met one or two others that I knew during my seafaring days there, one or two, but most of them I was never at sea with of course. You must remember there was, there was, a few thousand seamen from South Shields alone and, it was quite unlikely that you would know a lot of them. Not only that, most of the ones that I was at sea with have passed away. the older ones, but I still see different ones in here that I know.
