Emily was born in Front Street, Cullercoats. Her father was a plasterer and her mother sold fish. Emily worked in London during the war and returned to Cullercoats when she was demobbed.

When I think of where the house was, where we lived is now where the boats are kept on the street. The street itself has changed shape, and the only part of it left now is the Queen’s Hotel, and I remember we could look over our back yard wall and look into the back of that. But the whole street has changed. There were fisherman’s cottages there and now they’re little individual houses. Lots of people said that they should have left them and whatnot, but basically having been in one or two of them, at the time I used to think they were lovely cosy little places, which no doubt they were, but they were only one room and families were brought up in them, so that’s progress, isn’t it? Knock 'em down and build something else there.
