Emily was born in Front Street, Cullercoats. Her father was a plasterer and her mother sold fish. Emily worked in London during the war and returned to Cullercoats when she was demobbed.

Leaving school and the war
"Well, I had to leave at 14 and I worked in a shop as an assistant"
Well, I had to leave at 14 and I worked in a shop as an assistant. I think the wages there was about seven shillings a week, which was what, now, it’s- I forget- I can’t even work it out how much it is now. And then I worked in a cinema as a, usherette work, I think because it was more money- it was about 12 shillings a week then.
And then after that I joined the forces because the war was on, of course, and Cullercoats, as a fishing village was finished- the beaches were closed and I think there was a fair amount of fishing from North Shields, but not a great deal.
