Emily was born in Front Street, Cullercoats. Her father was a plasterer and her mother sold fish. Emily worked in London during the war and returned to Cullercoats when she was demobbed.

"I worked on radar on the gun site. It was what was termed Z battery"
I worked on radar on the gun site. It was what was termed Z battery, rockets and about 300 yards from the actual gun site was the radar station. Had it been too close of course, with those guns going off, it would have smashed the whole thing up.
So basically it was very nice and I loved the summer evenings because they had then what they termed the holidays at home, for obvious reasons. And if you were on duty, we were railed off of course, but there was a bandstand there, and various bands, perhaps a fire station band or a local band would come and people came and danced. And we could hang over the railings and watch it, and wished we were there. But it was all very nice. It was, I know it sounds now very tame and whatnot, but it was lovely.
