Emily was born in Front Street, Cullercoats. Her father was a plasterer and her mother sold fish. Emily worked in London during the war and returned to Cullercoats when she was demobbed.

Oh the beach! We practically lived on it as youngsters, of course, well, really the beach was the only place you played. In the summer mornings, I remember rattling about the house wearing pyjamas, you got those off and put your swimsuit on and a pair of sandals and off you went and went home when you were hungry.
