Lifeboat Day and Polly Donkin

I just remember when I was a child, a youngster, they did used to have Lifeboat Day, which was quite a day of course. They used to haul that boat up Whitley Bay, down onto the seafront and then back from the seafront right along here, and there was a sort of carnival with it. It was really quite a day. It was only once a year so it was quite day. And most of the village women would be there collecting money. They had little lifeboat shaped collection boxes there and that was quite a day. But other than that, I don’t think anything went on.
I remember one old dear, Polly Donkin, her name was, you may heard of her, I don’t know. She had done so much good for the lifeboat, in those days it was really something terrific- she had to go to London and be presented to King George V and she got a medal. And I remember the whole village being up at the station to meet her coming back. You know, when you live in such a tight community, these things are really, and I can remember that. I possibly was only about eight or nine years old.
