"I served my apprenticeship at Vickers Armstrong’s at Elswick"

I served my apprenticeship at Vickers Armstrong’s at Elswick. It was in the days of the old five year apprenticeship with a year before that, you had to work as, at various jobs, and I worked as a plans store boy, where you had to distribute plans and drawings throughout the works, so it gave you a feel for the works and then you started the apprenticeship in the factory and that consisted of a training period and training school and working in various shops, and I ended up in the breach mechanism shop for the naval guns.
