Frank Taylor

Frank was born in Cullercoats. He fished from Cullercoats and North Shields from 1979 to 1989. He has been involved with the RNLI since he was a teenager and is now Deputy Launching Authority. Frank is also a member of The Coble and Keelboat Society.

Frank was interviewed by Kylea Little on 4 December 2005. The interview took place at Cullercoats RNLI lifeboat station and lasted 21 minutes and 11 seconds.

My father was a fisherman and coxswain of the lifeboat and my mother was one of the last of the traditional fishwives who sold crabs and lobsters at the front door.

Well my ambition was to become a fisherman like my friends and my family but my mother experienced so much poverty in those…and sometimes the fishing isn’t always good... she had experienced a lot of poverty and hardship and she refused to let me into the fishing industry and so I ended up getting a job as draughtsman and after ten years of drafting I entered the fishing industry. But I entered too late and a lot of the licencing regulations had been brought into to force by the… and I found myself on the wrong side of a very important licence so I ended up leaving the fishing industry and going back to drafting.

The first boat I had was 30 foot and we worked off the beach with a tractor and trailer like you see with the other boats like they do at Newbiggin but when I couldn’t get to the salmon fishing I bought a larger boat, 35 foot boat and she was too big to work out of Cullercoats so I kept her at North Shields.
