Role at the RNLI
"Started off as crew, and now Iím too old and my eyesight notís good enough to be crew, so now Iím a Deputy Launching Authority "
Started off as crew, and now Iím too old and my eyesight notís good enough to be crew, so now Iím a Deputy Launching Authority principally, so when the pagers go off my first role is to contact the coastguard and find out what the problem is, and then I contact the boathouse to make sure thereís a suitable helmsman in charge of the boat for the weather, the given weather conditions. And then when the boatís away, if thereís nobody to drive the tractor to launch the boat, Iíll drive the tractor and then I record all the radio conversations between the boat and the coastguard and any other emergency service thatís involved.
