Role at the RNLI
"Started off as crew, and now I’m too old and my eyesight not’s good enough to be crew, so now I’m a Deputy Launching Authority "
Started off as crew, and now I’m too old and my eyesight not’s good enough to be crew, so now I’m a Deputy Launching Authority principally, so when the pagers go off my first role is to contact the coastguard and find out what the problem is, and then I contact the boathouse to make sure there’s a suitable helmsman in charge of the boat for the weather, the given weather conditions. And then when the boat’s away, if there’s nobody to drive the tractor to launch the boat, I’ll drive the tractor and then I record all the radio conversations between the boat and the coastguard and any other emergency service that’s involved.
