Fred was born in South Shields and went to Ocean Road School. He worked on the tug boats before going to sea in the merchant navy when he was 17.

The catering boy's wages
"And we travelled the world with that ship- went right around the world with it"
And we travelled the world with that ship- went right around the world with it. And it was quite an experience. But at that time, the wages for that ship, for me, for the catering boy's wages, was seven pounds a calendar month. And out of that seven pounds I had to leave my mother two pounds a fortnight which was like only a pound a week, but it didn’t seem much but the wages was only seven pounds. And of course when you wanted to go ashore you had to get a sub from the captain. And I used to just get a couple of pounds to go ashore just to have money in my pocket in all the different places. And then when I paid off that ship after 10 months’ work I got £32 or something, that was my total pay off pay.
