Gary first saw people surfing in Wales in 1971. He began surfing three years later. He moved to Saltburn in the 1980s and began to sell and hire surfing equipment from the beach. The Saltburn Surf Shop has continued to grow.
Gary was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 9 February 2006. The interview took place at Saltburn Surf Shop and lasted 16 minutes and 50 seconds.
Surfing and Captain Cook
"Well, Captain Cook obviously was probably one of the first ever people to see surfing from Europe"
Well, Captain Cook obviously was probably one of the first ever people to see surfing from Europe, you know, they obviously landed in Hawaii and places like that and all the locals used to do it, you know. It was the sport of kings, but, even, you know, local people could surf in other places and certain beaches were kept for the kings and queens of Hawaii, but when it, obviously when surfing came back, sorry, Captain Cook came back he, you know, it was written up in the journals, so people didn’t know what it was but that was put in the first man’s eye. But Captain Cook, being from around here, you know, he was born in Great Ayton which is only about eight miles away, you know, he worked in Staithes which is another eight miles down the road and then he went to Whitby which is 20 miles down the road, and that’s where he became captain of a whaling ship, or coaster actually. And obviously there are links with Captain Cook in this area, so we decided to call that contest the Endeavour Trophy, you know, in his honour, really.
