"The equipment here, you know, obviously the water’s cold, it’s a harsher climate"

The equipment here, you know, obviously the water’s cold, it’s a harsher climate, you know, this time of year you definitely need a 5mm or a 6mm wetsuit. You need gloves, you need a hood and you need boots, you know, 5 or 6mm boots, you know. And you need a good fitting, you know, equipment, so you’re not getting any excess water in. You can comfortably surf out, I’ve surfed here in minus 10, it was minus five the other day and we were all out, it was pretty nippy. In minus 10 you have about an hour, and you’ve got to get changed very quickly when you come out of the water because as soon as you take your wetsuit off, that’s when you actually cool down, so. But generally, you know, if it’s a warm day, there’s a bit of sun out and it’s just above freezing, well, you can last two hours, but obviously wetsuits are getting better, they are warmer, and they’re better fitting, they’re more stretchy and that helps you spend more time in the water as well, and eventually they might invent a wetsuit that warms up.
