Gary belongs to: Saltburn Surfers
Gary first saw people surfing in Wales in 1971. He began surfing three years later. He moved to Saltburn in the 1980s and began to sell and hire surfing equipment from the beach. The Saltburn Surf Shop has continued to grow.
Gary was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 9 February 2006. The interview took place at Saltburn Surf Shop and lasted 16 minutes and 50 seconds.
"The equipment here, you know, obviously the waterís cold, itís a harsher climate"
The equipment here, you know, obviously the waterís cold, itís a harsher climate, you know, this time of year you definitely need a 5mm or a 6mm wetsuit. You need gloves, you need a hood and you need boots, you know, 5 or 6mm boots, you know. And you need a good fitting, you know, equipment, so youíre not getting any excess water in. You can comfortably surf out, Iíve surfed here in minus 10, it was minus five the other day and we were all out, it was pretty nippy. In minus 10 you have about an hour, and youíve got to get changed very quickly when you come out of the water because as soon as you take your wetsuit off, thatís when you actually cool down, so. But generally, you know, if itís a warm day, thereís a bit of sun out and itís just above freezing, well, you can last two hours, but obviously wetsuits are getting better, they are warmer, and theyíre better fitting, theyíre more stretchy and that helps you spend more time in the water as well, and eventually they might invent a wetsuit that warms up.
