Gary first saw people surfing in Wales in 1971. He began surfing three years later. He moved to Saltburn in the 1980s and began to sell and hire surfing equipment from the beach. The Saltburn Surf Shop has continued to grow.
Gary was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 9 February 2006. The interview took place at Saltburn Surf Shop and lasted 16 minutes and 50 seconds.

"I think I’ve got two that stick in my mind really"
I think I’ve got two that stick in my mind really. One of them was I was surfing the cove with Mike and Glen and it was 10 to 12 foot, a maximum of what it holds. It was pretty windy but the faces were pretty clean and I remember I was surfing for two hours and just dropping into some of these huge tubes and getting tube three or four times on a wave, you know, just like. The first hour I think I surfed pretty well, by the second hour I was getting pretty shattered and near the end of the trip I did have a couple of gnarly wipe-outs where I was held in the water very badly but that’s the day which I will remember the rest of my life.
The other one is it was super clean down on Runswick Bay and it was eight to 10 foot and I was out with my partner Nick Noble and we were on slightly bigger boards than normal and we paddled out to the reef and these super lines and waves were coming in and they were like 100, 150 yards long, eight to 10 foot and we were just ripping to shreds and you know, it was just like blasting the waves.
But we did have a few wipeouts- we did get caught by sets that were swang out a bit too far so we did take the wipe-outs as well as having those brilliant rides but that day was super clean, hardly any wind and I don’t think I’ve had it like that ever since.
