"It’s a thing I had, I joined the union when I was 16 years old"
It’s a thing I had, I joined the union when I was 16 years old and I, I just, you know, I just went, you talk to people and this, that and the other, and you slowly get interested. And I’ve been involved with them since I was 22 really, representing people and things like that. Since leaving, since leaving Doxford’s I’ve kept the interest going because the last job I had before I retired I was the representative of the welders, and so I just kept it going. I was really keen to keep it going, and I thought a lot of people weren’t interested in doing that type, that side of the job, they thought, you know, you were getting too involved, but you had to have some people who were that way inclined to, or else you wouldn’t get what you got, you’d never get, in regards to facilities and conditions and all that. It wasn’t all about demanding things, it was about trying to help people as well. And management as well, it was a case of trying to work hand in hand with them. You got a bit off them but you give them stuff back, you see, which was the way I worked, I always thought that way as well, it wasn’t just a case of do this, do that, I always went in to treat people with respect, hoping they would treat us with respect and get us the best possible deal we could. That’s the way I worked and I always thought that way. I would rather have gone that way than somebody that was going in saying, “if you don’t give us this, we’re going to go back to the men and demand that we go out on strike or something like that.”
