The Evergreen Club
"Well, the Evergreen Club, it was, it was a thing we started for the old retired men and women"
Well, the Evergreen Club, it was, it was a thing we started for the old retired men and women in the office, I think it was 19.. in the 70’s and it was a case of the men used to pay so, so much a week out of their wages, I think it was about it was about 10 pence in those days, every week out of their wages, and the firm used to contribute to it as well. And what we used to do in the, in the summer, we used to take them, they used to all come in, we used to send invitations out and the certain dates, and we used to ask them to come into works and they used to come, visit around the works again and see old friends and then we used to take them on a trip up to Weardale, up to a place called the Rancho Del Rio just outside St John’s Chapel, we used to give them a meal, and a couple of drinks, and then they used to have a bit sing-song, people got up to sing, and it was lovely, lovely afternoon for them and they really all enjoyed it. And there was that many people we used to do it two days a week, you know, two days. There was too many of them just one day, and we used to come back and drop them off at their homes in the night.
