Jack was born in Ryhope in 1940. Jack worked at Doxford's for 29 years. He is married with two sons.

"At Christmas we used to make food parcels for them"
At Christmas we used to make food parcels for them, food hampers I should say with everything in, from tins of ham, beans, tomatoes, fruit and vegetables and what have you. And I think we used to give them a little miniature or something, for a drink for them. And we used to, we had a committee and we used to take them out and deliver them all to their houses and that was really appreciated. And any parcels we had left, which sometimes we did, we used to raffle them off amongst the lads in the shop floor which was a good way of keeping interest going as well. I used to love doing that and keeping in touch with the old people again, and they used to love coming in to see us.
And we also had in the canteen, we used to have a Christmas dinner for them, and they used to come down and have a Christmas dinner in the canteen and they loved that as well. It was another chance to come into the works when they’ve been in for their dinner and we had a bit of a party for them. And that was good as well. It was a good way of keeping in touch with all the retired people.
And unfortunately some of them did die and we always used to send a representative to their funerals and things like that, which were sad occasions but it was a good way of showing that you appreciated them as well.
