Jean Dougal began diving at the age of 68. She regularly attends pool sessions and dives off the North East Coast during the summer months.
Jean was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 6 March 2005. The interview took place at Fenham swimming baths and lasted 10 minutes and 15 seconds.

"Well, we come on a Monday night and do your course, and once your course is finished, it’s just like a social night"
Well, we come on a Monday night and do your course, and once your course is finished, it’s just like a social night, you come, I mean tonight I haven’t got my gear, last week I had my gear because it keeps you practiced, you know, and last week, like I say I had my gear on and I was under the water flying about backwards and forwards, and we’ll just chat, and there’s the sauna and the steam room- most of the men seem to prefer the steam room to the sauna, but, but it’s just a social occasion, really. And you’ll arrange, “see you on Tuesday,” and things like this. Weather permitting, it’s always, you know, tied in to weather permitting, you can’t sort of say, “I’ll definitely go next Wednesday.”
I mean, one night we were all, all ready out just loading the gear in the car when the phone rang and said, “it’s off- the sea’s too high,” so it’s, it’s a bit of a hit and miss sort of thing. But on a Sunday morning, we’ll go up there and have our dive and then there’s a caravan that does bacon sandwiches and tea, and things like that and everyone just stands around and chats, and you know, it’s really nice. And of course, like non-diving partners and children and, you know, go up and things like this, so, it’s really nice.
