"Because Iím related to the Lisles and the mission Lisles here, and my great grandfather founded the one here, the Fishermanís Mission here"
Because Iím related to the Lisles and the mission Lisles here, and my great grandfather founded the one here, the Fishermanís Mission here, the Cullercoats Fishermanís Mission, so he was my great grandfather. And we were all, we all had to go to, we had to watch our Pís and Qís as you might say, and my father was in the choir and the fishermenís choir, and they all were, you know, and it was very strong, then.
Itís still going today now, but thereís very few go now because theyíve all died off and all the Lisles have gone just about, you know, and they use it, they still use it and theyíll have their little coffee mornings now and again to make a little bit of money, and things like that. But itís taken over now by the Methodist, it was Methodist anyway, but the Methodists on the Broadway, theyíre sort of the, itís all in the circuit now with the mission, and then the rest went to St Georgeís.
But there were the, the Broadway Methodist Church now was on Johnís Street here, along here, and it was bombed during the war, there was a bomb dropped, it was the organist and his son, young son, young son was killed. Just one of these sneak raids in and out, dropped the bomb and hit a church. And so there was no church there, that was the Methodist church, until, well, 40, 48 years ago, it would be. They built the one on the Broadway in place of that one. They used to meet in a stable behind Monkís Haven, what they call the stables; they werenít stables then, by then, you know, with them, Monk's Haven with the Methodist guest house, and we all, we went there, we went there and then we went up to the Broadway after that.
