Jimmy was born in Dulwich in London. Jimmy served in both the Royal Navy and merchant navy. He was on the Ashanti when it ran aground at Whitburn in 1940.

During the war one of our favourite places was Lyness canteen, that was in Scapa Flow. It was a horrible place really but it was much, much better than being at hold. And you went ashore there and you got, you used to have beer tickets, two beer tickets, two pints a man when you went ashore. Well I got more than two pints because I saw the stuff being delivered outside the coxswain’s office one day when we were in port and I saw all these tickets, they were like cloakroom tickets. So I just took a few rolls away. So it didn’t matter what colours were issued, we had them.
