Pilot apprenticeship
"Yes, well, my apprenticeship was for four years"
Yes, well, my apprenticeship was for four years. I left school and I had to have so many O levels to get into the apprenticeship, then the, most of the time we were operating the pilot launches, we crewed the pilot launches which took the pilots out to sea and to board the ships, and we had two days a week when we would go to South Shields Marine and Technical College, and we, we trained up to what was then, what, second mate’s standard, and also we used to go onboard with pilots to understudy them so that at the end of the four years we’d had a good grounding in not just the river work but also in being, in the work of ships and the work of an officer on a ship.
